<title>Reflections on Developing a National Campaign for Basic Income in Ireland</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10197/3828</link>
<description>Reflections on Developing a National Campaign for Basic Income in Ireland
Ryan, Anne B.; Baker, John
In May 2011, a number of people got together to reactivate BIEN Ireland, which is one of BIEN’s oldest national affiliates. This paper gives a brief narrative of the activities of the group over its first 15 months. Because many of the members had not previously been involved in BIEN, our aim was to develop an approach to our objectives and strategy that involved the development of shared understandings and mutual learning. Recognising the limits on participation set by people’s other commitments, we aimed to spread the workload in ways that were sustainable and inclusive. This paper is intended to give us a chance to reflect on what we have achieved and failed to achieve, to share our experience with others, and to learn from the experience of others.

<title>Inequalities of Love and Care and their Theoretical Implications</title>
<link>http://hdl.handle.net/10197/3823</link>
<description>Inequalities of Love and Care and their Theoretical Implications
Baker, John; Lynch, Kathleen
In this paper we use the framework developed in Equality: From Theory to Action to review some recent empirical research into caring relationships. This research shows that even within the context of care, inequality is multidimensional. It reveals complex patterns of inequality of work, resources, love and care, power and respect and recognition, shaped by many social factors including gender, social class, family status and disability. We also argue that this research raises important issues for normative political theory. In some cases the implications seem fairly straightforward. In others, it highlights questions that egalitarian theorists need to address more thoroughly.

<description>Farmers on the move : the strategic mobilisation of the farming lobby in 1960s Ireland
Gibbons, Ann
This paper traces the origin, development and mobilisation of the farming lobby in 1960s Ireland. It constitutes part of the oral history of farming in Ireland and illustrates the early history of the Irish Farmers’ Association (IFA) from a time when there were few structures up until the 1980s when it stood as one of the most important and influential organisations in the country. Through personal experiences and a number of documented contemporary sources, this paper captures the lives of men and women who participated at this pivotal time.

This Report presents the findings of the first Irish research project on gender budgeting. It explores recent international and Irish experiences of strategies towards greater gender equality and develops a template for applying a gender budget approach in selected local development organisations. The research was funded by the Gender Equality Unit of the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform who have responsibility for promoting and monitoring gender mainstreaming in the Irish National Development Plan 2000-2006 (NDP).
